Breaking news: the Village of Riverwoods passed a Tobacco 21 ordinance last week which raises the minimum sales age to purchase tobacco products–including e-cigarettes and vape pens–to the age of 21. Because 90% of those who provide tobacco products to teens under 18 are themselves under 21, Tobacco 21 has been shown to reduce high school smoking by over 50%. In addition, restricting the sale of vape pens, which can also be used for marijuana, increases barriers to ingest drugs in this highly concealable manner.
Other cities and towns who have passed Tobacco 21 include Highland Park, Deerfield, Lincolnshire, Vernon Hills, Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, unincorporated Lake County, Evanston and Chicago. The State of Illinois is currently considering a statewide Tobacco 21 law. For more information about Tobacco 21 laws, visit tobacco21.org
