Rules Aren’t Just for Board Games – Plus 60 Second Conversation Starter

Parent and youth surveys show that parents and their teens are on the same page about alcohol use:

  • 87.5% of parents do not allow their teens to drink alcohol with adult supervision (2018 CTAD Parent Survey)
  • 82.7% of DHS & HPHS students said their families have clear rules about alcohol and drug use (2018 Illinois Youth Survey)

Even as teens get older and their desire for freedom increases, they still need (and want) clear expectations to help guide them and keep them safe. While teens are learning responsibility around their new-found independence, it’s important to communicate to your teen clear limits, boundaries and consequences around alcohol and drug use.

As the holiday season nears, talk to your teen about your expectations for family gatherings and role play with them on the question: What can you say if a family member offers you alcohol?
It’s not one 60-minute conversation. It’s 60 one-minute conversations.
