This year’s spring break may not feel like much of a break, but these creative parents have some terrific ideas:
Plan Unique Activities
- Challenge your family’s inner food critic (and support local!) Pick a type of cuisine for dinner, order curbside pickup from a few restaurants and then vote on the best taco, pizza, sushi or burger. For dessert, rate your favorite ice cream flavors from local ice cream shops.
- Drive Chicago’s vibrant art community and explore its street murals. Take a photo/selfie in front of your favorites and pack a picnic to enjoy in the car.
- Plan a scavenger hunt as a family while checking out the great things to do in Chicago.
- Discover Chicago’s great architecture. Walk Brookfield Zoo or Lincoln Park Zoo and watch as the animals come out of hibernation when zoos reopen this month.
- Hike Starved Rock State Park or enjoy historic Lake Geneva.
Give Back to the Community
- Volunteer at Feed my Starving Children which is open in several area locations.
- Spend a morning as a family purging clothes and other unused items. Deliver them to your local shelter.
- Ask your local food pantry or place of worship about ways you can assist families in need or connect with seniors who live alone.

NOTE: If you travel outside Illinois over spring break, keep in mind Lake County Health Department’s out-of-state quarantine guidelines.
